Sierra Leone’s Men’s Under-16 basketball team has suffered a difficult start at the FIBA Zone II U-16 Qualifiers in Senegal, with two heavy defeats raising questions about the team’s preparation and the broader development of youth basketball in the country.
The Sierra Leone side lost 88–45 to hosts Senegal before suffering another comprehensive defeat, this time a 70–31 loss to Cape Verde in their second match.
While defeats are part of competitive sport, the margins in both games have prompted concerns among basketball stakeholders about the level of preparation ahead of the regional tournament.
Questions have also emerged over the administration and preparation of the national team, with allegations that some members of the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation executive were not sufficiently involved or informed about aspects of the team’s selection, fundraising and preparations. The claims have not been independently established and would require clarification from the federation.
Concerns have also been raised about talent identification, particularly the inclusion of young players from outside Freetown. Some stakeholders from the provinces have reportedly called for a broader scouting system to give talented players across the country a fair opportunity to represent Sierra Leone.
The tournament has once again highlighted the need for a structured pathway for youth basketball, including nationwide talent identification, regular training camps, quality coaching, adequate funding and transparent selection processes.
For Sierra Leone basketball, the heavy defeats in Senegal could provide an opportunity to reassess the country’s approach to youth development and international competition.
