According to sky news, the UK government has announced that 16- and 17-year-olds will be eligible to vote in the next general election, set for August 2029 — a move hailed as one of the most significant changes to British democracy in decades.

The policy, announced on July 17, 2025, fulfills a core Labour Party manifesto promise aimed at increasing youth participation in politics by lowering the voting age from 18 to 16.

While supporters argue it will empower young people and strengthen democratic engagement, critics — particularly Conservative MPs — claim it’s a partisan move intended to benefit Labour, raising concerns about the maturity and readiness of younger voters.

Despite the pushback, the government maintains the reform marks a bold step forward for political inclusion, stating, “This is the biggest change to UK democracy in generations.”
